I will take this sterling silver fork and show you how I make it into a heart ring. Step one, obtain a sterling silver fork of course.
Next I use a rotary tool to cut the outside tines off. Looks kind of weird doesn't it? Don't worry it will look better after a little work.
To narrow the ring and smooth the edges I first sand it down with my detail belt sander.
As you can see it still looks weird but it is now smooth on both sides and ready for the next step.
which means a little time on the buffing wheel.
Not a great picture but the sides have been buffed to a smooth finish.
To make the tines bendable they must be annealed with a torch. Here I am applying a special paste that protects the silver from fire scale.
Metal must be heated to a certain temperature to make it pliable for bending into the desired shape. Sterling can be a bit tricky. Believe me I have made my share of silver scrap while doing this.
After heating the paste residue must be cleaned off. That means a detergent bath, a good scrubbing.....and
